Move-Out Cleanout Checklist for Reno Renters & Landlords

A simple timeline for renters moving out, plus what landlords and property managers should know about clearing a unit between tenants.

The easiest move-out is one where you get rid of what you won't take before moving day. Sort early, sell or donate what you can, and book one pickup for everything else. Here's a timeline that works for Reno renters, and a few notes for landlords.

Two weeks before you move

  • Walk every room, the garage, patio and storage unit. Mark what's coming with you.
  • List furniture you won't take on Facebook Marketplace or Nextdoor.
  • Check your lease for move-out cleaning rules and how your deposit is handled.

One week before

  • Drop off donations. See where to donate furniture in Reno.
  • Book a junk removal pickup for everything left over. One pickup is usually cheaper than several dump runs.
  • Set aside paint, cleaners and chemicals. These need special disposal and can't go with regular junk.

Moving day

  • Have the junk pickup come after the movers, so nothing gets hauled by mistake.
  • Clear the closets, cabinets, garage and patio, the spots that most often cost renters part of their deposit.
  • Take photos of each empty room for your records.

Don't leave it by the dumpster

Leaving furniture or mattresses next to an apartment dumpster or on the street can lead to cleanup charges from your complex. In Washoe County, illegal dumping can carry a fine of up to $1,000.

For landlords and property managers

Tenant leftovers slow down turnovers. We clear furniture, appliances, trash and garage junk so your cleaners and painters can start sooner, and we can meet tight turnover dates. Before you remove anything a tenant left behind, follow Nevada's rules for abandoned tenant property. Check with your property manager or attorney if you're not sure. See our commercial junk removal service for property managers.
