In Reno, you can take household junk yourself to Waste Management's Commercial Row or Stead transfer stations, or to the Lockwood Regional Landfill east of Sparks. Here's what to know before you load the truck.

Stead Transfer Station (North Valleys)
If you live in Stead, Lemmon Valley, Golden Valley or Cold Springs, the Stead Transfer Station at 13890 Mt. Anderson St. is usually closest. It's open Tuesday through Saturday, 8 AM to 4 PM, and closed Sunday and Monday.
Dumping in Sparks: Lockwood Regional Landfill
Sparks residents and anyone east of Reno can use the Lockwood Regional Landfill at 2700 E. Mustang Rd., off I-80 at exit 23. It's open Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM. See our Lockwood Landfill guide.
How to pay
The transfer stations take Visa, MasterCard, Discover or a personal check, and the landfill takes cards. Neither takes cash. Fees depend on the size and type of your load, so ask WM for current rates.
Free dump trips for Reno residents
Reno residential WM customers get one free truckload, four times a year, at the transfer stations. Bring a recent WM bill or an ID with the matching service address, and your account has to be current. Renters or anyone dumping for someone else needs written permission from the account holder. The form is on WM's Reno website.
What you can't dump
Paint, chemicals, fuel, pesticides and other household hazardous waste don't go in the regular load. WM takes some of these for an extra fee. Call (775) 329-8822 to ask what's accepted. Electronics should stay out of your trash cart, too. See our guide to what junk removal companies won't take.
Tips for a smooth dump run
- Cover and tie down your load. Loose debris on the highway is dangerous and can get you a ticket.
- Load heavy items first and separate recyclables like cardboard and metal.
- Go early on a weekday. Saturdays and the weeks after holidays get busy.
- Take recyclables to WM's free Eco-Center drop-off on E. Commercial Row instead of paying to dump them.
When junk removal makes more sense
Hauling it yourself works for a few bags or a light load and a truck you already own. It costs more than the dump fee once you add a rented truck, gas, a helper and a lost afternoon, or when the job involves stairs, heavy appliances or more than one trip. JUNK.99$ prices by the cubic yard, starting at $99 for half a cubic yard and $125 for one cubic yard, with loading, hauling and disposal included. See our pricing or ask about same-day pickup.
Ready to clear it out? See our cleanout service or check our junk removal prices. Pickups start at $99 and the estimate is free.
