Reno Recycling Guide: What Goes in the Cart, What Doesn't

What goes in your blue cart, what belongs in the trash, and where bulky or hazardous items should go instead.

In Reno, Waste Management's single-stream recycling cart takes plastic bottles and containers, metal cans, glass bottles and jars, and flattened cardboard and paper. Plastic bags are the most common thing that doesn't belong. Here's the full breakdown from WM's Reno service guide.

What goes in the recycling cart

  • Plastic bottles, jars, jugs, tubs and containers
  • Aluminum and steel cans and tins
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Flattened cardboard and paperboard (not bundled or tied)
  • Flattened paper (no shredded paper)

Empty containers and wipe out food, and don't bag your recyclables. Put them in the cart loose.

What goes in the trash instead

  • Plastic bags, straws and plastic utensils
  • Broken glass and ceramics
  • Juice pouches, and cartons with plastic tops
  • Polystyrene foam and waxed cardboard
  • Food wrappers, pet food bags and food-soiled paper
  • Garden hoses, diapers and pet waste
  • Food and yard waste

Free recycling drop-off

WM runs a free Eco-Center drop-off on E. Commercial Row: cardboard at 1100 E. Commercial Row and mixed recycling at 1391 E. Commercial Row, Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 3 PM. It's useful after a move, when you have more boxes than your cart can hold.

Hazardous waste and electronics

Paint, chemicals, batteries, fuel and other household hazardous waste never go in the trash or recycling cart. WM accepts some of these for an extra fee. Call (775) 329-8822 for what's accepted and where to bring it, or see Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful at ktmb.org for other local options. Electronics should stay out of your carts, too.

Bulky items: furniture, appliances and yard waste

Couches, mattresses, appliances and piles of yard waste are too big for your carts. You can haul them to a transfer station (see our Reno dump guide), or have them picked up. JUNK.99$ hauls bulky items from anywhere on your property and donates or recycles items when possible. Refrigerators, freezers and AC units contain Freon and need special handling, so they carry a disposal surcharge. See our pricing.

Ready to clear it out? See our cleanout service or check our junk removal prices. Pickups start at $99 and the estimate is free.
